ピナ・バウシュの映画を観ました。
日常で見慣れない動きを観ると、人って不安になるのですね。ざわざわします。
そんな不安がいつのまにか落ち着くと、惹きこまれました。
ここまで何かに夢中になり、愛せること、仲間を信頼できるってすごい。

“Dance, dance…. Otherwise you are lost.”
「踊りなさい。自らを見失わないように。」
ピナの言葉。メモメモ。
映像、素晴らしいです。音楽もとてもよかったので、サントラ買おうかと。
でも、仕事中にかけると捗らなさそうです。

タイトルは、個人として初めてお仕事をさせていただいたお客様の言葉です。
インテリアデザイン、空間デザインをメインにされているBEETS inc.のインテリアデザイナー、
日比野義之さん。
椅子や照明など、インテリアプロダクトのデザインもされていて、
近年、海外のインテリアフェアに出展されています。
不思議なご縁があって、出展のお手伝いをさせていただきました。
2011年はイギリス、TENT LONDON。
そして2013年はスウェーデン・ストックホルムでのStockholm Furniture Fair。

ご本人は気さくで優しく、お話していて本当に楽しいのですが、会話のはしばしに、ものづくりへの妥協の無さ、最終的な形にしていくまでの徹底した姿勢が見え隠れする、とても魅力的なクリエイター。
自分の感覚を明け渡さないところに、いつもインスパイアされています。
作品づくりは、信頼厚い家具職人さんと何度もディテールの作りこみを繰り返すのだそうです。
次第に、「これだ！」という形が現れるのだと言います。そんな作品は、余分なものがなくシンプルですが、ディテールにこれまでにないフォルムやアイデアが散りばめられていて、
飽きることのないチャーミングさと、尽きることのない美しさがあります。
この作品の魅力を、なんとか英語で伝えたいと、英訳に取り組みはじめたのが、
個人的な活動を始めたきっかけでもありました。

感じるのは、作品それ自体に力があるから、言葉を超えて作品自体が語るのだということです。
私がじたばたと英訳しなくても、たくさんの人がひきつけられ、海外から熱烈な問い合わせがあります。ものを作り出すって、なんてパワフルなことだろう、と羨ましくなります。

昔からものを作る人に対する憧れがありました。
ただ私自身は、美術館に行っても、まずタイトルや背景など文字にばかり目がいってしまう活字中毒です。
自分にできることは、日々なんとか文字や言葉と格闘しながら、伝わる文章を作ること。
それによってものを作る人に喜んでもらえるのであれば、本当に嬉しいことです。

そんな日比野さんから聞いた印象的な言葉を、タイトルにしました。
「自己責任でやりきることが大切」ということ。
「自己責任で」「やりきってない」仕事の結果がいかに多いかということ。
フリーランスになるときに、この言葉が常に心にありました。
「自己責任で」「やりきってる？」というのは、自分自身にいつも問いかけていたいです。

2013年2月にストックホルムで開催されたファニチャーフェア、Greenhouseでも話題だった日比野さんの作品。海外のメディアでも紹介されています。

It Is Vital to Stick to My Ways in Order to Make it

The title of this post is taken from the words of my first client, Yoshiyuki Hibino. He is the president and designer of BEETS inc., specializing in interior and spatial design. He has also been eager to design products and furniture, such as chairs and lights, and recently participated in the well-known international furniture exhibitions: TENT LONDON in the U.K. in 2011, and Stockholm Furniture Fair in Sweden in 2013.
By a curious turn of fate, I have been commissioned to support him in these endeavors.

He is a really nice, friendly person, and at the same time, a great designer with an uncompromising attitude to perfecting his work. He trusts his feelings and puts thought into his words, which always inspires me.

When he makes a piece of furniture, he continues redesigning fine details with a reliable cabinet-maker and evolves his design concepts over and over. Through this process, the design acquires depth and finally its shape gains a solid presence. The work is minimalistic but is innovative in its detail—creating never-ending appeal. I really want to convey the charm of his designs, which is one of the reasons why I started writing in English.

His pieces are exquisite and tranquil yet powerful, so they easily transcend language barriers. No complicated explanation is needed. Many people fall in love with his pieces and send messages of enthusiasm from all over the world. He creates such influential pieces!

In my teenaged days, I had longed to become a kind of artist. However, I have an addiction to the printed word and am a bookworm. My eyes are automatically drawn to text, even in museums. For better or worse, it is my nature. All I can do is to create sentences, struggling with words and phrases on a daily basis. If I am able to help someone write English, that is a great pleasure for me.

Getting back to the title of this post, Mr. Hibino one day said, “it is vital to stick to my ways in order to make it.” When I decided to be a freelance translator, his words came back to me. I would always ask myself if I do stick to my ways to do my best.
