昨日、仕事の打ち合わせも兼ねて、家具職人さんの工房にお邪魔してきました。

 

大小、種類もさまざまな木材たち。

カットされ磨かれて並んでいる家具のパーツたち。

引き出しを開けるとずらりと鉋。その数・種類の多さ。壮観です。

天井もとても高く、あちこちに道具が掛けてあり、機械もあって、

まさにものをつくる現場。

鉋をかける職人さんの姿も、とても格好良くて。

緊張感もあるけれど、木の雰囲気のせいなのか、あたたかい場所だなあと感じました。

木のこと、日本の伝統的な道具、技法の話。

実際の現場、モノを見せてもらえること、人にあってお話を聞けること。

ありがたいです。もっとお話を聞きたかった。

 

その日は、一緒に見学したスウェーデン人のデザイナーさんに簡単な通訳もしたのですが・・・

自分の瞬発力の無さよ。何より発音が悪いんだなあ…。

こっそり反省し、向上を誓いましたよ。

翻訳、書くことが専門ですが、関わっているお仕事のつながりで、

たまにこういうお手伝いもさせていただいています。

会話は得意とは言えないのですが、

関わっている人たちが大好きですし、興味深い分野なので、とにかく飛び込んでいます。

 

自分が翻訳している分野だけでも、会話を通してわかりやすく伝えられるようになりたい。

「ブログを更新してないですね」と先日指摘されました。

おっしゃるとおりで…。すみません。

何か構えてしまって、書けずにいたらもう師走です。

 

今月は、ありがたいことに忙しくしています。

新しい出会いもあり、わくわくするような内容を翻訳させてもらっています。

 

「忙しい」って、会社勤めをしていた頃は、なるべく使わないようにしていました。

何か、ネガティブなイメージがありますし。

でも、今は、とてもありがたく、嬉しい気持ちで使ってしまいます。

 

お客さまと直接会って、お話をして、翻訳の目的をしっかりうかがう。

仕上がった訳に対して、ご意見をいただき、それを適切な形で反映していく…。

後から気づくこと、足りないところ、まだまだたくさんあります。

でも、お客さまにとって良いと思ったことは、自分の判断ですぐに試せるし、

身軽に行動できる。

この働き方が、シンプルで、本当に気持ちがよいなあと日々感じています。

 

お客さまに恵まれ、たくさんの人に支えられ。

Someone commented the other day, “you haven’t written your blog recently, have you?”

Yes, right. I was embarrassed….

It has been over a month since this website was launched. While I have been too self-conscious to write down my feelings, Chirstmas is coming up!

Now I have a more relaxed attitude. Maybe this is the best way.

These days I have been pretty busy, which is really wonderfull for me. I met a new client this month and have been commissioned to translate some work that I am really interested in.

When I wasn’t working for myself, I avoided using the word “busy” because it sounded negative and made me feel powerless. But now, I sometimes say to myself with pleasure, “Oh, I’m busy!”

Meeting my clients face-to-face and listening to what they really want to convey comes first to me. Once the translation work is complete, I show it to them and receive their feedback, and then reflect it appropriately into the translation.

I sometimes wonder if I could have done a better job each time. While I may be lacking in ability in some fields, once an idea comes to mind, I do my best to go above and beyond my clients’ expectations. I have the freedom to choose the best course of action to meet my clients’ needs.

This is a very simple work style that is free from constraints. I love it.
